[Lyrics] the GazettE – LAST HEAVEN

Always stay this way
I’ll be right here
something deeper than words
Last heaven

The distant sky,* infinite time, now I ask the overflowing stars
I want this never-ending, continuously spinning
blue merry-go-round**
to exist for “eternity” like you

Love without shape changing day by day
Layers of time pile up
Let’s stay like this, looking at our unreachable dreams
Long road which leads to the calm hill
I will leave my sadness behind
Good night… My beloved
Last heaven of mine

This everlasting season, this rolling sea, I ask the overflowing stars
The never-ending, continuously spinning
blue merry-go-round
If I were to become you, please tell me that it is “eternity”***

Love without shape changing day by day
Layers of time pile up
Let’s stay like this, looking at our unreachable dreams
Long road which leads to the calm hill
I will leave my sadness behind
Good night… My beloved
Last heaven of mine

Memento mori
All things must have an end
But you don’t need to grieve
We’ll be able to meet again

Love without shape changing day by day
falling deeper
two are one
becoming a shooting star
Long road which leads to the calm hill
Like turning on a light
Illuminating tomorrow
Always stay this way

Love without changing day by day
Layers of time pile up
Let’s stay like this, looking at our unreachable dreams
Long road which leads to the calm hill
I will leave my sadness behind
Good night… My beloved
Last heaven of mine

Always stay this way
I’ll be right here
Something deeper than words
Last heaven

[Translator notes]

* The kanji used here is 宙 (chu), which means “space,” but Ruki pronounces it as sora, which means sky. It seemed more poetic to say “distant sky,” but I think his intent is for it to mean both.

**I consulted my Japanese roommate about this line and although 青い (aoi) can be translated as “inexperienced” as well as the color “blue,” in this case she said it is definitely “blue.” It seems that Ruki is describing the earth itself; something that spins endlessly like a blue merry-go-round; especially considering the lyrics right before that part (distant space/sky, infinite sky, stars, etc.).

*** original Japanese: キミに成れば「永遠」と教えてくれ
There are two ways that this line can be interpreted: 1) When I become you, please tell me that it (the moment of me becoming you-ness) is “eternity” 2) If I were to become you, please tell me that it is “eternity.” The two translations are very close, but the feeling is different. The first implies that I am on this path leading to eternity, and I want to be told when I actually reach that point of eternity whereas the second is implying that I am on a different path, but if I happen to become “you,” please tell me that that is “eternity.” Ruki seems to have written this lyric purposely so that the listener/reader can interpret it either way. I chose to go with the latter.

personal thoughts: It seems that this song is, indeed, a love song, but not between two people; it’s more like the intangible thing that love is. Sometimes it ends, but you can find it again, so it’s something that lasts for eternity and definitely something that is much deeper than words.

anyway, sorry for the lengthy explanations. I just feel that a lot is lost in translation T_T Ruki really is a genius. My roommate said that to a Japanese person, his lyrics are really beautiful (like the rhythm of the words and whatnot). This song really is open for interpretation as each person understands the lyrics differently. Feel free to ask about/give input to any parts of my translation!

Original Lyrics:

Always stay this way
ここにいるよ 言葉よりも深く
Last heaven

遠き宙 無限の時 零れる星に今願いを
限りなく回り続ける青いメリーゴーランド
キミのように「永遠」でありたい

Love without shape changing day by day
時を重ねる
届かない夢を見ていよう
Long road which leads to the calm hill
悲しみは置いて行くよ
Good night…My beloved
Last heaven of mine

不朽の季 波打つ海 零れる星に今願いを
限りなく回り続ける青いメリーゴーランド
キミに成れば「永遠」と教えてくれ

Love without shape changing day by day
時を重ねる
届かない夢を見ていよう
Long road which leads to the calm hill
悲しみは置いて行くよ
Good night…My beloved
Last heaven of mine

Memento mori
All things must have an end
But you don’t need to grieve
また めぐり逢えるよ

Love without shape changing day by day
深く重ねる
二人は一つ
流れ星になって
Long road which leads to the calm hill
光を灯すように
明日を照らす
Always stay this way

Love without shape changing day by day
時を重ねる
届かない夢を見ていよう
Long road which leads to the calm hill
悲しみは置いて行くよ
Good night…My beloved
Last heaven of mine

Always stay this way
ここにいるよ 言葉よりも深く
Last heaven
